Jennifer Lappe is a pretty normal sort of family photographer, from Tampa, Florida – tho’ her galleries are mainly little girls, with just a few babies, mums-to-be and boys in the mixture. Then in September last year she came out with this lovely session of her daughter Addy:
….posting a related blog piece entitled “One Girl, One Light, One Feather“. She has a tendency to come out with photographic truisms at times, but can also be refreshingly humble and inspirational:
“I think the times where I went into a project or an idea with pre-conceived ideas or notions of how I wanted something to be – with no flexibility – was when my work suffered. Sure ideas and planning are a must, and going into a project with the overall picture of what you want to accomplish is a must. BUT there is also the adaptability factor that separates good from great- the ability to say, okay this was great in my head, but not so much applied, let’s adapt.”
Personally, I think that these portraits are so successful because she dropped her “dress obsession” (as she calls it), and went for an intense view of the person she probably knows best in the world (and Addy really is her muse).
She has done similar portraits before and since – head’n’shoulder shots with a dark background and a sensual feel – but as isolated portraits with no obviously unified artistic vision involved:
…..and, as you can see, producing some really lovely portraits – not only of Addy. When I said “sensual” before, it’s clearly not in a sexual sense – she revels in the skin textures and tones, the colour and details of the dress or headpiece, the light softly reflecting off ringlets and waves in the hair – they are very physical, tactile portraits….
She’s even done a session with the daughter of a contributor to her blog, the great Alethia Rains:
…..whom I’m sure wouldn’t be ashamed to have taken it herself – as it compares well with ones she’s done of the same little model (see the link).
Here’s some more of Jennifer’s work:
……the last, angelic portrait of Addy was an “Inspiring Monday” choice on Child Photo Competition.com, Vol.159 (see the Facebook link below).
A lot of the shots have a tendency to emphasise the “princess” vibe that American mothers seem to want in paid-for sessions featuring their daughters….tho’ while Jennifer uses Addy to tempt paying customers with gorgeous dressy shots – I feel sure she loves the look herself, as well.
My last point is a little unusual, in that Jennifer is also so good at shooting her oldest son, Iain, that for once I’m including that usually-spurned family figure….a boy:
…..any one of them being competition-winner quality…
And not forgetting Jennifer herself – a really talented photographer, whom I think should consider adding headshots to her available products:
