[This post celebrated Alexandrena’s expected baby: and on the 6th April 2017 Ruby Alexandrena Riseley was born – I’ll come back later with some cute shots…..until then, just congratulations 🎆👸🎊🎇🎉👼😊💑💐🎉🎀🎈!!!]
….get this: the portrait’s title is “Milly, 2014″, and it’s an outtake from Melbourne photographer Alexandrena Parker’s series “The Forgotten Ones” – for me it’s up there with the best of Jock Sturges and his disciple Ryan Mills. In fact if you click on Ryan’s Instagram image link below of Thémis and Elsa ouside a Huy wine bar- it’s the second post in his feed at the time of writing – you’ll find a comment by Alex consisting of five smiley faces: she’s a real fan….
The context of the image above, however, brings up one of the points of this post – “The Forgotten Ones” is a photographic project with an unusual premise:
“A collection of portraits of young Australian individuals who have a sibling with a rare disease. The project seeks to celebrate and recognize the unspoken and often forgotten support that siblings provide to loved ones suffering.” (Alex Parker, Instagram: see image-link below)
…..doubly interesting, in that Alex herself suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, and understands the sensitivity and support family can provide in situations like this – while at the same time she’s now about to give birth (due April 19th), knowing that one person in twenty-five is a carrier of the disease. She says that she already spends four-to-five hours a day on respiratory physio and other health-related chores – and with the baby on its way she’s going to have to give up most work, so partner Mike is becoming the main breadwinner – here’s the post revealing the big news:
"It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. The Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more." – Dr Seuss 🎄 Looking forward to meeting the best present of all next year 💕 👶🏼 #alexandrenaparker #pregnancy #20weeks #halfway
Anyway, it seems like a good time to present a gallery of her most memorable work up to this enforced hiatus – remembering she’s Meika Woollard and Tutu du Monde‘s historically most used photographer…..
First my two favourites by her that don’t involve Meika or T du M:
….where the dappling of the shadows makes a good portrait great: given that a rather similar shot by Italian photographer Stefano Azario featuring Olivia Fanders – with the same effect (and popularity) I’ve even called “iconic” – here:
……some of the following definitely deserve the same status – see how many you recognize:
….like a lot of fashion photographers, Alex isn’t too sentimental about her older promotional sets, so it’s a matter of detective work to weedle out obscurer images (and be sure of attribution: T du M for example very often don’t add the photographer’s name) – so don’t be surprised if other portraits get put in later. Also I’ll insert the news of her baby when he/she arrives (hoping for a girl, naturally!!👼👸) at the top of the post…..
In the meantime, here’s a last shot from the “Forgotten Ones” project:
……and it’s every bit as good as the portrait I opened with: I’m sure after she recovers from giving birth, and embraces the totally new emotions that a first child inevitably incurs, we’ll be seeing a lot more personal work like this…..I hope so, anyway.
Lastly a little innovation – after celebrating female photographers who include themselves as attractive models in their photostreams – here’s Alex’s male hunk, partner Mike……now get out of that bed and burp the baby….:
Another out take image from The Forgotten Ones portrait series. || This is Kate. She loves going to preschool, jumping on the trampoline and adores her big brother, Henry. Henry suffers from Eosinophilic oEsophagitis which is an allergic inflammation of the oesophagus. Henry suffered with pain for most of his early years and was allergic to almost all foods until he was 4 years old. He can now only eat very limited foods and suffers from intense stomach pains, headaches, mood swings, reflux and sleep disturbances. ||| The Forgotten Ones- A collection of portraits of young Australian individuals who have a sibling with a rare disease.
