…….this is a pretty unexceptional portrait by one of the doyennes of American “atmospheric” children’s photography – Ashlyn Perkins (Ashlyn Mae was her maiden name – the indiscriminate use of both can be a bit confusing): her style can be summed up by what doesn’t interest her:

As far as what type of photography interests me the least – lifestyle, documentary and street photography.” (Ashlyn Perkins interviewed for metalndvst.com)

……so expect a lot of editing, and rather unreal (almost surreal) skin effects – and a lot of concentration on the eyes:

When I was a child, I constantly doodled eyes. They covered my school binder and the margins of my papers. I think I’ll always default to a lovely closeup of the face.” (Ashlyn Perkins, ibid.)

….so this is probably her default:

…….and $697 will get you enrolled on her week-long online “Luminescent Skin Workshop” so you can attempt the same effect yourself……while this is her most-used example of what she does/what she’s aiming at as a final product (there’s a an extreme close-up of this as the Facebook link below):

……and she promotes this end-result thus:

How I achieve luminescent, glowing skin is the most asked question I receive by far. I will be up front and honest to say that this is something that is very personal to me as it is a signature look that I have worked long and hard studying, testing and working on with a singular focus to pull away from the flat, dull, powder-finished skin that is prevalent in photography these days.” (Ashlyn Perkins, luminescentskinworkshop.com)

……one problem I see is that if you’re using a mid- or long-shot with bare arms etc., then the contrast with the un-edited skin is quite marked (and obviously usually the neck also hasn’t had the same treatment) – and sometimes the “glow” is a bit too much:

……the other major problem being that she ends up just doing single, extremely static portraits: balancing two or three models’ skin tones in the same shot, shadows and the slight blurring from movement clearly making the editing that much harder….

She’s still a fascinating photographer – buried away in the North Carolina countryside with three sons (if she’d had a photogenic little daughter running around to snap, maybe her views on lifestyle photography would be different), and a history-professor husband. Luckily she found some beautiful models – like my example (Landry Karras – see the image link – she’s worked with other greats like Katie Andelman and Sandra Bianco). This is my favourite shot of my favourite of her models – where she’s captured a real expression and sign of character (she calls it “Doll Face” – but this is one “doll” whom I think would happily kick her brother’s butt):

……and finally, what about Landry? She’s made a number of portraits of her:

20160512-6P1A0045-500PX

…..often like this one, where you almost feel you’d need to keep inflammable material away from her face, she’s “glowing” so much….and see her mother Trina‘s Instagram image link just below….
