Nikolia: Jigsaws, Bondage and Death

Nikolia: Jigsaws, Bondage and Death

Having downloaded these three mosaics from a mirror of the Lithuanian Nikolia brand’s Instagram stream, they weren’t in a sequential order – so I had a bit of head-scratching in order to reassemble them. The second one was the most difficult, with the girl’s features being stuck in the mid/bottom right, not in the centre of the image, where I’d expected them to be…..anyway, if it’s raining where you are, you might….? No, you’ve got things to do and places to be, I’m sure…..

Two of them at least show the quirkiness of the brand’s outfits – the first one…..

……reminding me of Gérard Harten‘s iconic image for Tartine et Chocolat:

……tho’ quite a bit longer, the dresses are reasonably similar in concept. The last image shows their use of thick, soft materials – giving heavy, dramatic folds, rather like Airfish:

….where the soft-yet-rigid quality apparently comes from using a thick sweatshirt-type fabric.

Here are some more of their styles – first what is probably their signature dress (with useful places for a girl to keep her bullets):

…..the last one being KPim in a blurry Franck Malthiery shot for Hooligans Magazine – where she/he/they apparently saw the necessity to wear pants under a perfectly normal dress….

It’s a rather strange company in that their Twitter and Facebook handles are @nikoliajeans, while Instagram is @nikolia_kidswear  (see below for image-links) – and the extremely useless home site nikoliakid.com refers prospective purchasers to nikoliajeans.com – which has sunk without trace….I honestly can’t see them lasting – unless they become an Instagram-driven brand sold in designated online shops.

Here’s the rest of a limited choice:

…..as you can see, a wild variety of styles and type of presentation – leading to these two:

……which seem to be inspired by bondage-chic, and an eagle carrying its dead prey/model……imaginative, but I can’t see them generating an enthusiastic client-base.

Last (and I mean last) are two much more mainstream images by recently-posted photographers:

….the first being by, um….Isa Battaglin – pretty well immediately after saying I was giving her a rest – and the second by Molly Magnuson from the previous post. However, they both show a very different side of Nikolia – almost as if the brand can’t decide between being fashionable but hip (like Airfish), or outré but still hip (like Soft Gallery).

It’s run by two young female partners in Vilnius (the Lithuanian capital), saying on their site that:

“There are 2 of us. One is an engine of creativity and the
other is perfect for everything else.

At the moment we are really happy to act as a team and complete each
other. We present you a totally jeanswear collections for children of
ages from 1 to 8 years.” (Nikoliakid.com)

…..where the “jeanswear” origin of the company hasn’t been rewritten to reflect the present reality of general kids/babywear. One of them I know is Ieva (Eve) Domarkaite – and her friend is called Ruth. They had problems in Lithuania, and after “tilting at windmills” ineffectually for some time, closed down the operation there, going completely international. These smiles are probably a bit forced:

……anyway, the seem to be an interesting pair – read an interview with them here.
