Varya by Roman Kramskoy – Pridnestrovian Photographers II

Roman Kramskoy is my second unheralded photographer from the Moldovan town of Tiraspol, after Vladimir Timofeev (here  – and for all things Pridnestrovian). In both cases there was a degree of luck involved – again I noticed the (beautifully delicate and feminine) portrait above while searching something quite different.

Roman seems to use his account on 35photo.ru as his home site – having over 120 followers, and nearly 150,000 views – while his Vk.com account has far more photographs – over 2,500 compared with about 350. The b&w portrait above is rather unrepresentative of his work, as he predominately produces glamour/boudoir images (with a high degree of artistry) – and in fact I’m sure he wouldn’t consider himself to any extent a children’s photographer – particularly as pretty well all the relevant shots are of this girl, whom I’m convinced is his daughter, Varya (Barbara):

…..and with the five above I chose what I consider to be among his best work, to hopefully indicate what he’s capable of in this genre.

Going through what seem to be sets, there is a group where Varya is wearing a bright red dress:

…..and you then realise that in the b&w opening portrait –  and three of those in my first gallery – she’s actually wearing screaming red….

…..probably a favourite dress – or one worn around Christmas – so you really have no way of knowing how many sessions it represents, except possibly from the well-applied luscious red lipstick that’s absent in the last portrait.

There are definitely some images that relate to discrete sessions:

……and you discover along the way that she’s a really great little model – particularly for an amateur – going from ultra-groomed hipster to wild-child; from romantic to domestic – with a good command of expression and emotion: and Roman shows himself to be comfortable with the different styles that are needed to put the moods across.

[Roman put two new portraits of Varya on Vk.com just after I published this – really lovely and elegant: that girl has great taste…..]

…….the last image giving more of an indication of what he can do when he’s tweaking his adult, commercial portraits….if only he’d try it with more portraits of Varya…..

    1. Nitin – I’m really sorry, but I’m not a photographer – just an admirer and publiciser of the photographers and models that you see on the blog. I can see from your site that you are in fact an expert – and I can see why you like Roman Kramskoy’s work.
I just added a couple of portraits of his daughter Varya that he uploaded to his Vk.com photostream yesterday – so he is very active. I’d suggest joining Vk.com or 35photo.ru, so you can message him directly – he seems to be a pleasant, helpful guy…..

  2. I love all this, his style. This one stopped me, shooting downward like that, cool.

But then, this is twice now that you’ve made me grunt a Keanu Reeves “Whoa.” The first was the Lisa Visser’s twins. You know I printed them and I’m hanging them on the wall?
But these B&Ws and fiery reds of his daughter are fantastic. Great on their own, but paired with it’s opposite makes it complete. Very very cool. Were there any more of these?

  3. Not that I could find: I’d love to see the colour version of the first one, to understand why he preferred b&w…. And how photographers always have photogenic children….I’m starting to think there’s an evolutionary principle involved…. With the first one you reposted, at first I thought she was crawling out of a hole in the wall!! 😥😌😅😁😉😖

    1. That first BW is excellent, it was the hair that caught my eye, and I didn’t really know why, then I saw the red and that was it, I could tell she was a redhead from the black and white photo. I’m sure you see it, it just looks different.
