I'm not sure she's real, perhaps I just imagined her. #indiapoppyrose

A post shared by amelia hambrook (@amelia_hambrook) on

It might seem strange, doing a post on a photographer and her daughter immediately after reblogging a piece featuring the same two (see previous post for link) – but after the reblog I was aimlessly drifting through Amelia‘s Instagram feed, when I had a small epiphany. It’s the usual happy tumble of four children having exquisitely-photographed fun together – from eight-year-old India to recently new-born Hugo – and I’d honestly have to say I’ve posted on a number of similar Instagram/Flickr families before: but this time I was really struck by how much this blog originates from my own lack of sisters or daughters.

I’m sure it’s a complex psychological process that I’m probably the last person to try to fathom – and I’m equally sure that it makes my pleasure in visual reproductions of young females hopelessly separate from physical reality…….except how their own mothers also sometimes perceive them. In Amelia’s post above she comments – whimsically, but with a note of true wonder:

I’m not sure she’s real, perhaps I just imagined her.”

………which reminded me of a comment to a portrait of her daughter (Imogen) by one of the Flickr mother/photographers, Angie Baxter, from August last year (here):

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________40028096lnd

My baby. My big girl. What a gift to be her mother – although somehow I think she’s just bringing me along for the ride.”

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t feel you’d get the same reaction – awe, disbelief in their almost supernatural beauty and already-formed characters – from the mothers of boys: maybe my own emotional and aesthetic responses aren’t so unrealistic after all – but would I feel the same if I’d been vaccinated by my own dose of sisters and/or daughters?

I’ll leave the question hanging – but also note how welcome a slight break this is: featuring such a seemingly-uncomplicated, domestic version of girlish sweetness amidst Evgeny Matveev‘s body-conscious, isolated teen models. This isn’t to criticise him – who knows what relationship India and Imogen will have with their own bodies and sense of self at the ages he’s portraying – and how they would present themselves to a photographer in solitary portraits in a studio, or out in the woods.

Anyway, India’s present life is spent deep in the bosom of a loving family – with the ducklings, crayfish, and wildflowers – a girl who luckily (as her mother says) loves babies and little brothers, while having a dreamy, contemplative character that enjoys poems and writing songs:

The Instagram feed is obviously dominated by the kids, and India in particular – but tells a bitter-sweet story as it unfolds (or in fact recedes into the past – as social media tend to). Amelia is English, and about half-way through her mum died back home. She might seem to be living an idyllic existence in the countryside near Nashville – four adorable kids and a husband whom she dotes on (even writing a poem to him for their anniversary) – but the loss of her mother put the value of everything (physical as well as emotional and spiritual) in doubt. She’s a strong, gifted woman with a lot going for her, and I have no doubt she’ll get through it in time – but as always, perfection is very much the perception of the outsider: her real life is as complicated as yours or mine.

Here are Amelia and India together – two really special people:

As a PS, I’ve also decided to remove the two sidebar galleries – their content seeming more puerile day by day. Given that the space will always be there, and may as well be used, I thought a gallery devoted to the “iconic” images I’m often banging on about would be a good substitute. Watch this…….well, that….space….

Eight with #indiapoppyrose has had me pulled back into my childhood full of strong memories of moments realizing what's fair and what's not, friendship woes, becoming more independent, planning future adventures, really thinking for myself. And so the complicated journey really begins to adulthood. She's very much like I was in some ways, but much braver. I only hope I can get through it as well as I know she will. • • • • #pixel_kids #candidchildhood #letthekids #cameramama #childhoodeveryday #magicofchildhood #childhoodunplugged #kidsforreal #thesincerestoryteller #clickinmoms #runwildmychild #mymagicalmoments #raisinggirls #stillagirl #motherhoodunplugged #childhoodmemories #unitedinmotherhood #childhoodeveryday #simplifymotherhood #follow_this_light #my_magical_moments #celebrate_childhood

Claudia, Paola and Itziar for Casa Patas: Flamenco en Vivo

Claudia, Paola and Itziar for Casa Patas: Flamenco en Vivo

Rather unusually, just a video: this is an evening’s flamenco display at the Casa Patas in the middle of Madrid. Apparently you can eat traditional Spanish dishes while watching just-as-traditional flamenco dancing – but this is special because of the absolutely amazing performances by a number of young girls at the beginning (about the first 3½ minutes with Claudia, Paola and Itziar, and then Paola again right at the end – but the Flickr link below has just over a minute of highlights, if you prefer).

These girls aren’t any different from their peers: it’s just that the moves of flamenco give them a recognised format through which they can express extreme feelings –  frustrations, passions, anger, desire, sadness….. The dance originally took place in caves, where oppressed ethnicities like gypsies vented their emotions – and the singing and music was much more important than the accompanying dance.

It’s interesting to compare it with the competitive, gymnastic and highly choreographed girls’ dance styles that are hugely popular in Western media these days – here the girls seem to get applause for the honest expression of inner passion, as much as for the good execution of particular pre-ordained steps. It’s often inescapably sexual – and the age of the girl hardly matters – but at the same time ritualised and contained.

Finally, “bonito” means “pretty” – and it’s a pejorative term when applied to flamenco….

[I apologise for the really naff (British word – look it up) featured image of a stock girl in a “flamenco outfit” above the title (the girls in the video are notably free from such tourist trappings) – I finally have to admit I’m a header junkie….rehab here I come…..but not until the next……]

Bart Ramakers is a Belgian photographer of rather grandiose projects:

Bart Ramakers (1963) photographs picturesque scenes that reflect on the “human condition”. He mixes fragments of myths and legends, gospels and fairy tales, operas and film classics to new stories, in a quest for what (still) makes sense, as a modern photographing Diogenes on the debris of the Occident. Cheerfully anachronistic and archetypal, because the human condition is eternal and unchanging.

Bart grew up at the banks of the river Meuse, in the shadow of the Van Eyck brothers. From childhood he drew, etched and painted, inspired by the Flemish Masters, by historical stories, baroque and romantic music and opera. His photographic tableaux usually descend from classical myths, legends and stories. They tell (from a contemporary perspective) myths of beauty and power, passion and betrayal, sensuality and brutality, life and death, often with a slightly ironic, sarcastic or humorous touch.” (bartramakers.com)

The video is about seven minutes long, but it’s really fun, visually abundant and full of picturesque castles, costumes, nude ladies (I slipped that in – there are, but it’s all very innocent), and colourful tableaux. You can see to some extent Bart’s vision – self-indulgent tho’ it probably is…

….personally I can’t imagine why he didn’t produce a short film, instead of/as well as the final tableaux that went on exhibition:

Once upon a time, at the end of the Ancien Régime and in the early years of Modern Times, a princess named Flore married the promising Duke Wolfgang d’Ursel. Together they lived a very eventful life on their estate in Hingene (Bornem) and far beyond. In 1792, during the vicissitudes of the French Revolution, they started to build de Notelaer, a splendid classicist pavilion on the banks of the Schelde. This is where last summer we brought to life the imaginary world of Flore d’Ursel, with 12 enthusiast actors and 12 crew members. The 10 photographic “tableaux” resulting from this collaboration form a light-heeled ballet with noblemen, gods and mythological figures.” (vimeo.com)

…….and here are two of the tableaux:

The little cupid (Amor) is modelled by Elle-Marie Westerlinck – who has a private Instagram account, and some posts on Picbear.com – but doesn’t seem to have done any other modelling or acting – and Venus by professional nude model (not a p*rn model) Eva Evian, a Latvian relocated to Brussels, who is on both Tumblr and Instagram, and has worked with Bart on other projects. Here they are in matching poses:

……and as you can see – and the video abundantly bears testimony to – Bart didn’t spare on the beautiful settings for his pièce de resistance (you can just see the decorated floor they’re lying on, in the big portrait at the start of the post)….really a film director manqué……..

……the last two images really give the main concept of the series: the blondes in off-white outfits melding with the redheads in the russet outfits – symbolic, but more visually-attractive than thought-provoking… I’m being a bit tough on the other three models by concentrating just on the youngest girl – eight-year-old Arina Tinkovan – but I don’t have a name for the only other one in the relevant age-range – the younger of the two blonde models. Arina’s a member of Iren Stramaus‘ Krasnodar- based model set – I’ve already posted on them three times, here – but this time she was photographed by young Kazan-based Eva Milkonskaya:1 involving a 1,800 mile round trip for her, as according to Instagram the shots were taken around Krasnodar: back in about March this year (see image link below). Eva is a bit of a mystery: she posts on serious-photographers’ platforms Flickr and 500px, plus Instagram and Vk.com etc. – but without commentaries or links (except to her own stuff). She probably identifies with the redheads: that’s her on the right with a good dose of freckles (and a nose ring)…

Arina, however, is a seasoned model even at just eight – these are from her best known set by Iren, from when she was about six:

…..where you can see the features that fascinate photographers: long, fine red hair, freckles, milky-white skin and an almost alien presence at times. She’s appeared in her fair share of cutesy-pretty-sentimental sessions to be sure – but also far more fine-art excursions than most models of her age….:

……Iren adds the comment “My love” to one of her many portraits of Arina – an indication of the strong tie between an artist (and good photographers are artists) and his/her muse….and one that I think intelligent parents appreciate when they’re putting their child in someone else’s hands to interpret their character, body and emotions via a particular visual medium – be it paint, sculpture, film or photography. And here’s Arina with one of those parents – her mother Olesya:

Rock & Roll: Lola Ahumada for Marcela Koury A/W 2014 via Flickr and YouTube

Rock & Roll: Lola Ahumada for Marcela Koury A/W 2014 via Flickr and YouTube

I’ll start with the YouTube video that actually names the two models, Lola and Mia:

……Lola Ahumada is the one on the right in the shot below with her finger to her lips (see link below). There is another girl in the accompanying campaign images on Flickr (see link below) for the Argentinian brand Marcela Koury – but as she’s not in the vid, she doesn’t get named. First, Barbie fuchsia (really – that’s its name) and black (maybe Batman black….) – the outfits are underwear and pjs/leisurewear……..and a hat:

12793841834_df24432ba2_b

12793842274_960da34d5c_b

……and then pink and cream (boring names…..):

12793417005_4c8fabf3ed_b

12793845544_79b79877b7_b

There’s a slight nod at a more edgy vibe than the colours would suggest – with the graphics trying to channel rock & roll and a cute heart-eyed skull – but since the brand only sells underwear and sleepwear for kids (and some swimwear, coming up), no-one’s going to know what a little rebel you are underneath anyway…..

There’s one shot on Flickr that mixes up the pre-teen Moustache collection with the younger girls’ Rock & Roll:

RSiO6Yi3iFP7

……..while the only other promotional/catalogue image I’ve found for the A/W 2014 collection is this:

a092433f958e28702ea6711a99d1cd93

…….reminding me strongly of one of the most exuberant collections of girls’ swimwear ever, by Agatha Ruiz de la Prada (for which I can’t find a useful link – I’ll try to do a post on it):

37052006vfp

……the Marcela Koury one is just an alternative shot of Lola wearing the crop-top outfit – here.

There are other sets on Flickr: pretty, but not as dynamic as the Rock & Roll ones – two swimwear portraits (‘shopped or twins – I give in…..):

With the MK brand, it’s interesting to compare the girl models and their young adult/adult model equivalents – since they (ostensibly) cover the entire age-range. One of their most hyped models is Luisana LopilatoMichael Bublé‘s wife:

Luisana_Lopilato_354

….and physically a typical underwear model. Lola is still at the stage where she’s not sure if she wants to look elegant – or go climb a tree….. Here’s a video – demonstrating her acting as much as her modelling skills (there’s a brief shot of her with Mia at about 1:43):

…….seemingly like all the girls I’m featuring these days, she’s appeared in a couple of films and mini-series – in particular the horror film Resurrection (Argentina 2015)…….I wonder if standing around in briefs holding a finger to her lips came in useful…..or she saw many skulls with cute hearts for eyes………?

Here’s a final gallery putting together the prettiest portraits from her very extensive portfolio: as I said, her blog is extensive, and she manages to also have a dedicated site, three Instagram accounts, two Facebook pages – and still have time to post on two Flickr accounts, one Twitter, and even curate a small gallery on DeviantArt!! I’m being really selective – so if you like the ones I’ve chosen, there are hundreds more out there you may well like even more – I’ve already put image-links in the previous two posts, but I’ll do it all over again at the bottom of this one (at least to the useful ones) – she’s really worth spending time over:

….and, as promised, a couple of shots that show how often she’s prepared to use herself as a model – particularly in tame boudoir sessions…..where she can bare her shoulders to her heart’s content….:

Alba Soler II: Clàudia Seguí and Ana Pérez

Alba Soler II: Clàudia Seguí and Ana Pérez

There must be something in the air around Valencia: after two previous posts to do native Valencian Aroa Renau justice, photographer Alba Soler from nearby Xàtiva is going to need three….

This second post dedicated to her starts with a series that appeared in her blog as illustrations to the post “What a Model Test Is” back in January 2014 – using Clàudia Seguí (see image-link below) as an example of a girl (tho’ at what age I’m not sure) in need of a model test – I linked to it from the post featuring Aroa‘s session with Alba, so some visitors/followers may well have seen it:

…..in the first and last shots she looks quite young, so they quite often get reposted on blogs featuring younger girls – while the rest of the session is more usually put with adult material (notice Alba can’t resist revealing at least one shoulder here and later). The “model-test” post Alba describes as responding to the fact that….

“……I’ve been asked a lot about this before and I’ve also noticed in social media that many people use it wrong…….A model test has the finality to offer a flattering but realistic image of the model. At the same time of having a variety of looks and attitudes to show her versatility.

To put it in other words, it is the tool that the agency is going to use to sell her as a brand. We as photographers have a limited number of photographs to demonstrate all that she can offer. Apart from her physical qualities, we would also show her skill to act and play different roles.” (Alba Soler 08/01/2017 ibid.)

…….there’s a lot more I could quote, but basically she divides the session up into three different parts. The one above is “Natural look, natural attitude“, while the next is to demonstrate “More personality, in the look and the attitude:

….they’re a bit repetitive, so I omitted a couple – but you can see how radiant Clàudia is: it’s one of those moments when a model really can do no wrong…..Alba says at the end:

Clàudia’s test was made in a simple way. There wasn’t a stylist, or makeup artist or hairdresser. It is true that her natural beauty makes it easy, but I wanted to show you with this example that beautiful things don’t have to be complicated, nor is a super-production always necessary in order to get a great result.” (ibid., my clean-up)

In the final part she aimed to get “More in the look, the interpretation more extreme, and the lighting more dramatic.”:

…..and finally there are three beautiful out-takes that seem to come from the second part of the session, which Alba didn’t use in the post – these two below, and the header above the title:

The second session featured Clàudia again, plus the equally pretty (and also a Valencian native) Ana Pérez, and was called “Unique Creatures” – but you simply MUST see the video first – it’s one of the loveliest I’ve seen from a children’s photo-shoot – and Clàudia and Ana here are clearly children (the associated post dates from 15/09/2013) :

Ana is very frustrating, by the way – I found her Facebook page (see image-link below) by going through Clàudia’s list of friends – but there’s almost nothing there……

Anyway, here are the “Creatures” – starting with one of the prettiest double girl portraits I know (and I’ve generally messed with Alba’s original image order, by the way):

……and I’ll leave you with Alba’s sweet, but rather fey introduction to the post:

Unique Creatures

From gray woods they eat, on silent feet, and wait to play with us.

You can not gather more sweetness, talent and beauty than in these little creatures.

They are Clàudia and Ana and are the protagonists of our latest children’s fashion story.” (Alba Soler, 15/09/2013 – the line in bold was actually in English, the rest is translated from Spanish.)

…..and I must admit that her tribute to the “sweetness, talent and beauty” of her models is really touching – and I look forward to posting more of Alba’s lovely images in part three.
