The run of Russian photographers – with just one Italian intruder in the previous six posts (considering Andrey Sharapov as Russian rather than Ukrainian) – is extraordinary: and now here’s another. Evgeny Matveev is a forty-six year-old from Saint Petersburg, and as well as the approximate age, has a lot in common with Andrey: they both specialise in gymnastics/dance, and are consummate, almost obsessive, photographers of girls.
Whether it comes from an understanding of the physical form via the two activities, I don’t know – but they share an appreciation for the whole body – legs, arms, backs – with consequently relatively less attention to headshots and clothing. Evgeny is formidably prolific – with more than 9,500 images on Vk.com alone, so it’s going to take a few posts to cover his output. I’m starting with the model in the opening portrait – Sonia – whose crowning glory is obviously her hair. First this set, which is one of the few named ones featuring non-gymnastics/dance sessions that he has on Vk.com:
The next set (including the header) I had to put together myself – for obvious reasons my file is entitled “Sonia – Hair” – shot a year later at sunset on the beach:
…….the emphasis on Sonia’s hair being mirrored in portraits he’s taken of another model – seemingly called Sasha – with hair more wavy than Sonia’s red mane:
…….as well as Vk.com, Evgeny has galleries on Photosight.ru, 500px.com, and Facebook (see image link) – including dipping a seven-image sized toe in Flickr. As offerings to a more general public, he has a (rather underwhelming) home site, and is is even featured briefly on Fkids.ru – and has started an Instagram account dedicated just to rhythmic gymnastics (see image link below). The next post on him will feature interiors – and if you glance through his portfolio, you’ll see that big choices will have to be made…..
In a recent post mainly on Natasha Lishtvan, this model – nine-year-old Saint Petersburg resident Polina Bogdanova – did manage to get an equal billing in the title, but little in terms of visuals – tho’ I did mention in passing how experienced she is (even shooting in Italy). This set by Ira Bachinskaya is one of her best – dramatic and impressive – making me realise that being nearly-albino (she is very blonde, with almost whited-out eyebrows) gives photographers, stylists and MUH artists the opportunity to use her almost as a blank canvas (tho’ her colouring responds particularly well to dark outfits and sets – this being almost counter-intuitive).
Ira is interesting – she is crazily productive – having masses of children’s portraits – plus galleries of stock images (completely different subjects) using the name Ingret . Meanwhile she also posts her real passion – cats – on DeviantArt (using the same name):
“I [‘ve been] photograph[ing] since 2002. [I] work with people, but my true love is animal photography.” (Ira Bachinskaya on DeviantArt)
Anyway, the unequivocal positioning of Polina on the block in her studio made me think about other sessions using the same trope – Ira using it herself on other occasions:
…….albeit with a different backdrop (the last model being five-year-old Aurika Stepanenko). Other examples that come to mind are obvious ones like the recent set with Gaia Iafrate, where the photographer (Francesco Chiappetta) had large blocks as constant elements for the models to pose with:
……not visually distracting, yet still giving the model a reference to stand in front of, lean on, sit on, etc. In this next shot from a post on “No Added Sugar” the blocks become (pointless) “stairs” – useful to sit on if you’re a young model holding a hefty baby….
Here are some more:
……as well as Aroa Renau (and friend), the last shot features one of Nick 11‘s favourite models – probably grown up and making her own children sit on blocks by now – have a look at his post here: the best are very good…. There must be hundreds more I just haven’t thought of – I’m sure big blocks are props a well-equipped photographic studio can’t do without. Here’s the rest of the shoot with Polina (and other models):
…….you get the feeling that Ira went for the stark, abstract blocks as the main prop because of the sculptural – yet soft – asymmetric quality of the outfits (apart from the rather flowing, flowery dress in the second image) – rather like the admirably extravagant Airfish confections:
……with the photographer/stylist having rather the same idea of placing the model in front of rigid, heavy marble steps to contrast with the equally soft, yet similarly dramatic, asymmetric shape of this dress.
Polina has naturally got a lot of normal, catalogue-standard work in her giant portfolio, but there are also some stand-out single images and sets:
……the set featuring the oversized gingerbread-man and doughnut is one of a number that Ira has done with the stylist from the previous post – Nadia Tsvetkova – and in fact in a comment to that post I said that I rather regretted not putting her name first. She is clearly very well connected in terms of commissions from brands and editorial sources, and is equally inventive with the ensuing sessions – and likes using Polina: here’s her contribution to the “Fiore” project with Maxim Vostrikov:
……Nadia also using Polina for a project (Aire) with another photographer – Denis Evseev:
…….these are relatively recent, and you can see the maturing of her beauty – also as stylists learn how to use the blondeness without just washing out her features: she really is superb in black and white – and see the header for what a touch of lipstick and foundation can do to bring out her eyes……
……..and a final gallery featuring diverse photographers:
………and as a reward for everyone who managed to scroll down right to the bottom – here’s a short video of Polina in a photo session modelling a tutu that’s pretty well the same as the one in the last portrait above (from about 2:20) – the photographer for the shoot being Barbara Shuravina, and the video photographer obviously Anastasia Nefedova:

This post is another with a bit of a story behind it – and it starts with an Instagram picture and comment by Russian photographer Maxim Vostrikov (it’s a Flipagram – there are six beautiful images). His (translated) point is this:
“Everything is changing, and although from the beginning of my work, I refused to take children, if and when taken, we would like to make really beautiful pictures in the fashion style, pick up style, clothing etc. And to find the person who did all this, somehow it did not work.
Last year, I was finally able to meet such a person. Not only that @naditsvetkova loves to work with children, she still sees the image in the same way as I do! That’s cool! Now we regularly conduct projects for children.”
The project that’s the subject of his post is “Fiore” (Flower) – a photoshoot carried out this Spring:
…..and it was obviously a project shared with (and probably originated by) the stylist he mentions – Nadezhda (Nadia – or “Nadi” as she calls herself) Tsvetkova. Another one was “Born to Fly” – offered a month earlier than “Fiore“:
…….gorgeous models of a high professional quality – and photographic values to match – for both projects.
Maxim, however, is hardly a newcomer to child modelling, no matter that he maintains he refused to do any up until just a year back – even this classic shot of Daria (Dasha) Kreys (which she seems to prefer to “Kreis” these days…..) is by him:
…..together with other portraits of her – first the same session, then a couple of others:
……then there are these:
…….tho’ I have to admit that this final group could all be from relatively recent sessions: his style seems to have matured greatly since the syrupy “Princess” set with Dasha. The last portrait is of Marta Krylova – and seems to have been shot as part of the promotional material for the “Pure Beauty” project – another co-production photographed by Maxim, and undoubtedly thought up by Nadia:
…….and again, I’m impressed by the quality of model he’s attracting – whether they like Nadia’s contribution, his personal work, pay, geographical proximity or whatever – Marta, for instance, is one of the best there is…
A lovely detail is the participation of Nadia’s daughter – six-year-old Eva-Victoria (Evi):
……..who’s also a model (featured in the header as well – tho, as you can see by the image link below, the photographer is Nadia Sokologorskaya)……….
……leading me to a final postscript, and a final high-quality (and high-personality) model – none other than Anna (Annie) Sutormina. I don’t particularly like the two portraits, and didn’t add them to the “Fiore” gallery…….but here they are:
There are even more shots from the two main sessions featured – particularly on Nadia’s Instagram feed (see immediately below for the link, with two models from a very different shoot to indicate what other types of work #vostrikovtsvetkova are capable of: no hothouse flowers or butterflies in sight…..).

If you look at the model featured in the header portrait – lying on a couch with a cheesy grin – you’d think she was just another pretty girl, probably posing for a stock image. You’d be right – but two excellent fine-art photographers have seen something else. The two images above are by the photographer from the previous post – Bozhena Puchko (one being the header/teaser) – her comment for the first image on Facebook being “Amazing Masha” (see image-link below), while on Instagram her comment for the second image is: “Absolutely new – my stunning [new] face“. The model is Maria Tsishchanka – who uses the diminutive Masha, calling herself Masha Tsi for short – but she isn’t really a new face: and this is where I ‘fess up to a misattribution…..
The other fine art photographer who has used her as a model is Sergey Piltnik – and probably most beautifully in these two portraits:
…….which I put in a gallery of portraits of Polinka Karpenko – here, and then repeated the error comprehensively here. I could blame Sergey for not being Ryan Mills and dutifully naming every model and location in every published shot – but I know he doesn’t, and just assumed they were Polinka from the context near portraits of her on his 500px.com gallery. And looking at them now – Masha doesn’t really look that much like Polinka anyway……tho’ the style certainly makes attribution harder – look at this shot of Polinka:
……still, it does give me a good excuse for dedicating a post to Masha – since while it’s anything but an insult to be confused with Polinka, it’s always good to have your own qualities recognised……..first by Sergey:
…….the last portrait being interesting, since on his Ok.ru feed, one of his friends asks where in Gomel (Belarus – Sergey and Polinka’s hometown) it was taken – the reply being near the railway station: which means that Masha either lives in Gomel (or nearby) or goes there for what seem to be numerous sessions (Sergey always hashtags his photos with #gomel) – here’s another one outside the railway station:
Bozhena, on the other hand, is a Moscow resident – but has shot Polinka in the past, and now Masha……the driving distance between the two cities being about 400 miles……:
…….as you can see from the first portrait and the image link below, Bozhena is starting a new project she calls “The Queen” – and being an enthusiastic promoter of her wares, is already calling it “stunning“……..if she keeps Masha as the lead model, there’s at least a good chance….
The third photographer in the title is Ruslan Huzau – in fact the stock image provider behind my header – and the creator of a lot of the images on Masha’s own Instagram feed. He uses his own name or Aletia on the various sites where he sells his stock (here and here, for example) – and again I don’t know if he’s a Gomel resident. Here are a few of his portraits – obviously shot more for their illustrative than artistic qualities, but perhaps giving a better idea of Masha’s real personality, when she isn’t being the serious, arty model:
…….and one last portrait from her social media feed – she doesn’t name the photographer, and I’m not going to hazard a guess – maybe I’ve learned my lesson….. 😚😚😚😚😚
This rather strange combination is by a Russian photographer who seems to divide her time between Princeton, New Jersey, and Moscow – Anna Ksenzenko. The strangest part is that it’s for Stella Cove (click for an interview with Anna) – so I presume it’s a one-piece swimming costume with what looks like a crinoline/hoop skirt support for a wedding dress placed over it – reminding me immediately of 3D sculptor Eric van Straaten‘s Caged Girl series:
…..it’s infuriatingly difficult to get crisp shots of his sculptures, for some reason: the second one is only clear since it’s still just a render that he has yet to physically produce in 3D – he describes it here (either to be called “The Medal” or “Profile”, as she’s holding a medal with a profile of her own face).
Anna’s model is Libby K – who has to remain semi-anonymous, since her Instagram is private, and you have to log onto her agency site (New York Model Management), to see the models’ profiles: understandable with the age group, but it doesn’t really work for professionals who need media exposure in order to survive. I took the portrait on the right from her Instagram bio page.
Anna is clearly seeing Marie Antoinette parallels in the shot, given her hashtags (on the image link below) – while I think self-confessed fetishist Eric has more this in mind:
……the ancestors of crinolines were farthingales, back in the 16th and 17th centuries – but the idea of giving skirts and dresses more volume seems to have been around forever: every other post I do seems to feature a girl (or girls) in tutus – basically the same idea, but using stiff or multi-layered fabric to get a similar effect – albeit with a much shorter skirt. To indicate the strong allure tutus have for little girls I’ve been known to quote (Tutu du Monde founder) Andrea Rembeck‘s depiction of her daughter:
“…..my daughter is a very girly girl and ‘practical’ is not in her vocabulary. Since she was 2 years of age she has refused to wear pants, claiming they are for boys only. So she’s happy to brave the elements in a tutu dress and a pair of tights.” (Andrea Rembeck)
The quote comes from one of the posts linked to above – for the Australian Dollcake brand – here’s one of their tutus (see post for links to Andrea’s quote and for possibly the most gorgeous gallery of dresses on the blog):
As I noted, Dollcake‘s designs for girls’ dresses are taken from vintage sources, and more from Victorian and Edwardian underwear than outerwear:
…….leading to this beautiful crinoline homage: and yes, it necessarily plays with the sensuous possibilities of semi-transparency – but if she’s dressed sensibly under it, it remains just a pretty, girlish conceit.
One big difference between the various outfits pictured goes back to the previous post and the “mini-me” girl’n’doll styles of Little Gloriana – twirlability (or lack of it). Clearly their dresses are perfect for twirling and dancing: volume plus movement. Volume was particularly important in the ‘fifties:
……..and while you can just read that this pattern is for “Girls’ Crinoline Slips and Petticoats” – the “crinoline” effect would come from the petticoats, not from hoops – and the skirts were perfect for movement. Real crinoline styles, however, are more like this:
…….a beautiful outline, and good for a genteel swish and swirl, but not really for a pirouette…….
Anna Ksenzenko is clearly producing a complete session for Stella Cove, and we’re just getting the bts teasers – the brand doesn’t only do swimwear – look at the header featuring fellow-New Jersey resident Teagan Parker (it helps for a model to live near a prolific photographer) – her reposted image below and the Smudgetikka Tumblr link at the very end – that’s no swimsuit that I’ve ever seen……
Here she is with Anna (now that is a swimsuit), and finally blowing kisses at us all (but you have to click on it to get your special one):

I’ve changed the title about four times – altering Miss Lishtvan‘s given name from Natasha to Irina and back again. On Instagram she’s Natasha (see below for image links), while on Vk.com she’s Irina – but the clincher was the declaration: “Hooray, we chose a model agency model is now -Natasha Secret Family Kids” – so I’m guessing that Irina is her mother. I posted previously about Alex and Diana (Adrianova) Secret, aka The Secret Family here, featuring some really wonderful flour-filled shots of Kristina Shmidt – ok, you’ve twisted my arm:
As I mentioned in that post, the Secrets run a turnkey photography-styling-studio-model operation in Saint Petersburg: and the “playing card” above is presumably a way of promoting Natasha as one of their signed models – on Instagram (see below) Alex says: “I print the instructions @di.secret” – and Natasha comments “Cool!”…….this was all just two days ago……
…….two days in which she might have checked out the Secret’s home site (here), and discovered she’s joining just four other child models represented by them – and I discover she really is “Natasha” – and she’s eight. There are a lot of impressive-sounding parts to the site that reveal themselves to be wishful-thinking (i.e. blank), except the number and quality of the studios – and the fact that Diana is a make-up artist and stylist as well as an excellent photographer. As you can see from the image link below, the first portrait is on Diana’s feed, and she says”PS I’m in love with this photo 😍” – so I guess this and the following set are by her (“Model Test”, apparently):
……she’s a bit of a hamster-face in profile – but with the Secrets at least she’s got an agency that necessarily need to use their own models in promotions, in order to save money – it’s just less likely that other photographers will cast her as well. The “Space Unicorn” session below seems to have been before they signed Natasha, since in the relevant image link featuring her, Alex refers to the OFK model agency. The other girl is the much more experienced Polina (Pauline) Bogdanova (using @pomina08 on social media):
…….that’s Alex in the last shot, and he’s another loved-up photographer – after Marina Alexandra in the previous post – putting this sweet portrait of Diana on his feed:
……and getting the hoped-for response “Bay 😍😍😍” from his not-so-Secret love…….
